RTBAV is not a firearms related program but rather focuses on participants’ self-awareness of the potential risks of becoming victims of criminal activities.  The seminar teaches easy to understand methods you can use to increase your Situational Awareness and lessen your chances of a criminal confrontation.  In the approximately four-hour program, you will get the tools you need to develop your own personal safety strategy and raise your awareness of potential risks.
Registration is open to teens and adults over 12 yrs. of age.
Cost of the program is $50pp or $80 per couple.

The First Shots programs, sponsored by The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), is intended to promote responsible firearm ownership (pistol, rifle, shotgun) through introductory seminars that focus on firearms safety and local/state/federal requirements of firearm ownership, coupled with a hands-on activity and delivered by experienced and certified instructors and/or Range Safety Officers.  First Shots teaches basic skills in firearm use and safety and should not be considered a complete course in traditional firearm training.

Programs are scheduled monthly on the first Saturday, June through September.  Pre-registration is required.  Cost is $25 per discipline.

Course Description:   The course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable, state, federal or local law.  This is an 8-hour program consisting of classroom and a live fire shooting qualification.  The course entails the official NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting program during which you will be provided the Knowledge, Skills and Attitude to become a “Responsibly Armed American”. Completion results in the award of an NRA Certificate acceptable to the State of Virginia (and others) in application for a Concealed Handgun Permit.

Course Content:        In the classroom, attendees will become familiar with firearm safety, firearm nomenclature and function, safe handling of firearms, and basic principles of use.  On the range, attendees will experience practical application of the firearm safety rules, firearm nomenclature and function, safe handling of firearms, and basic principles of use as taught in the Classroom Session.

Preparation:              You do not have to own a firearm to participate.  We will loan you a 22-caliber pistol if needed.  Plan to shoot a minimum of 50 rounds (100 suggested). We request you come prepared with your own ammunition for the shooting qualification.  Generally, the instructors will provide water and light snacks, however we suggest you provide for any individual needs for food and drink.  During same day programs (see calendar) a mid-day lunch break will be provided.

Completion:               Course completion requires attaining a passing score on an “open book” examination, and qualification at Level 1 (of 4 levels) of shooting by shooting 4 groups of 5 shots in a 4” group. All participants are provided the NRA program book (an excellent reference item) and the certificate mentioned above.

Course Description:   The course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable, state, federal or local law.  Our Defensive Shooting I program exposes the student to several schools of thought regarding defensive shooting techniques, utilizing the NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home program.  It lasts 8 hours, consisting of two, four-hour sessions.  The first four hours is classroom based, with the second session is held at the range under the supervision of certified NRA instructors and will put into practice the classroom topics involving firearm self-defense within the home.

Preparation:      The course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable, state, federal or local law.  It is important that participants have sufficient maturity and life experiences to be able to assess various situations and make mature decisions.

Participants must show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm to maximize what can be learned from this course.  Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following:

  1. NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate.
  2. NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program (Pistol disciplines)
  3. Pistol Qualification Card
  4. Military DD214 with pistol qualification
  5. Possession of a valid Concealed handgun permit
  6. Pass the Pre-Course Assessment. (contact instructors)

You are expected to bring your own defensive firearm, a minimum of 50 rounds of appropriate ammunition (100 suggested) and an appropriate holster for your firearm.

Generally, the instructors will provide water and light snacks, however we suggest you provide for any individual needs for food and drink.  During same day programs (see calendar) a mid-day lunch break will be provided.

Course Description:   The course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable, state, federal or local law.  Our Defensive Shooting II course introduces students to the Knowledge, Skills and Attitude involved in safely, responsibly, and effectively employing a concealed handgun for self- defense, utilizing the NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside the Home program.

This is an intensive course, as the student must learn and practice many diverse shooting skills to respond quickly and appropriately to the broad range of threats he or she may encounter outside the home.  Similarly, the student must learn and understand the unique safety and legal issues that apply when a concealed handgun is carried in public.  The course covers the legal ramifications of concealed carry, including who can legally carry a handgun, when concealed carry is and is not permitted, the legal and ethical ramifications when responding to a life-threatening encounter using a concealed handgun, and the legal, moral, emotional, and social aftermath of the use of deadly force outside the home.

This course is an intermediate level shooting course requiring students to have mastered safe gun handling and basic marksmanship skills prior to attending the course.

Course Content:         Defensive Shooting II is comprised a classroom session on Day 1 of 4-6 hours followed by a live fire session on Day 2 (possibly 2 days).  During the classroom session participants will learn the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations, and for the safe, effective, and responsible use of a concealed handgun for self-defense outside the home. Participants will gain understanding of the legal concepts relating to the use of firearms in self-defense, as they must know and observe not only general gun safety rules, but also safety principles that are specific to defensive situations.

The live fire session is held under the supervision of certified NRA instructors and will put into practice the classroom topics involving firearm self-defense within the home.  This program is conducted over 2, and possibly 3, days.

Course Preparation:  PREREQUISITE:  Students must have completed the NRA Personal Protection inside the Home Course or pass a pre-course evaluation prior to attending this course. Contact the instructor for details.

For the live fire session participants must bring their defensive handgun, a suitable holster, and 200 rounds (minimum) of ammunition. Generally, the instructors will provide water and light snacks, however we suggest you provide for any individual needs for food and drink.  During same day programs (see calendar) a mid-day lunch break will be provided.

Registration is for ALL sessions.  Cost of the program is $195pp or $350 per couple.

Ladies Only Programs:

Lady shooters are the fastest growing segment of the shooting sports public.  We are pleased to serve this segment of the public by offering programs and resources specific to female gun enthusiasts. In these 3-4-hour programs (pistol/rifle and shotgun) you will have the opportunity to receive firearms training by certified instructors in safety and basic marksmanship.  If you are brand new to firearms or have been shooting for some time, RPRC has opportunities for you to ignite a passion for the outdoors and shooting sports with like-minded women.
